“I don’t regret the things I’ve done.
I regret the things I didn’t do when I had the chance.”
Ultimately, this is what most if us would say, while shaking our heads despondently. We regret the chances we didn’t grab, the relationships we hesitated to foster and the decisions we were afraid to make then.
Now all we can do is, to feel sorry for ourselves over those missed golden opportunities, the important words left unsaid and the friendship which was was lost forever.
As long as you are still alive, you will have other opportunities waiting for you right now. Today is the day you have the chance to change tomorrow.
Here are 2 things you should do to avoid regrets in life:
1. Be Yourself
As I have always say, life is all up to you. It means you choose the life you want for yourself. You choose the life you want by doing the best you can right in this moment. Be bold and take the leap of faith.
You chose your own path to success without knowing the outcome. See what happened to Dick Costolo?
He started out as a computer science major. Then he got involved with improvisational comedy. And somehow Dick Costolo ended up as CEO of Twitter.
You never know where we may end up. The important thing is you need to take chances and keep moving. If you don’t make courageous choices for yourself, nobody else will.
2. Get It Done
Don’t keep planning. I know it takes time to do anything worthwhile doing. But remember you do not have to do it all at once. Break it down into small chunks. What I mean is just focus on what you can do today.
Yes, one day at a time. Don’t be overwhelmed. Do whatever you can within a day. It is much easier and doable to get it done for just one day.
Get it done daily bit by bit. If not, your task will pile up and you start to procrastinate. Then you start to feel remorse or bitterness for the unfinished work or the dread of what tomorrow may bring.
Here is what I learned from the comedian Jerry Seinfeld. Get a calendar that shows you the whole year.
Divide your work into daily bits. Each day, when you’re finished with your work, cross a big X in the day’s box.
Every day, you just focus to cross out the daily box. Just keep it going and after a few weeks, you will be amazed with the results.
